What is “Hyperlordosis”?
The normal spine doesn’t actually form straight up and down. The bones of the spine, or vertebrae, are stacked on top of one another to form three natural curves. These curves protect our bodies by allowing us to withstand a lot of stress on our bodies since our weight is now more evenly distributed. While having curves is meant to be good, too much of a good thing can become a bad thing. Hyperlordosis, sometimes called hollow back, is an overly exaggerated curve that can happen in our lower backs.
Why Is It A Problem?
Everyone has lordosis in their lower back – the spine needs this inward curve in order to work correctly. If this curve becomes too great however, more stress is added on other body parts causing poor posture and pain. Muscle stiffness and lower back tightness caused by hyperlordosis can become permanent overtime if not addressed.
What Can I Do?
Most hyperlordosis issues are due to a lack of balance between the lower back muscles causing poor posture. Addressing poor posture through exercise is key to strengthen the abdominals and stretch out the back muscles for proper alignment and relieve the pain that comes with hyperlordosis.
An exercise we would recommend is a supine knee-to-chest stretch:
This exercise is great to do in the morning while still laying in bed before starting the day.
Start by laying on your back with your legs flat on the floor and arms to your side.
Gently raise one leg toward your chest
You can support your leg by hugging it with your arm
Hold this position for about 15 seconds
Slowly return the back down into the starting position and repeat on the opposite leg
Repeat 5-8 times, or as tolerated
