Balance: It's A Balancing Act

Balance can be defined as the ability to control and maintain body position while moving or holding still. It can be influenced by several factors. Three factors we will discuss are your vestibular system, somatosensory system, and visual system. The vestibular system relates to your inner ear. If there are any abnormalities present in your inner ear, it can cause a feeling of a heavy head, vertigo, or floating. This increases feelings of falling. Regarding the somatosensory system, this system responds to changes on your skin and internally (proprioception). For example, when you touch something hot, cold, or feel pain, signals are sent through sensory neurons to elicit a response. Within the somatosensory system there is proprioception. Proprioception is the body’s ability to recognize positions of limbs and movement. Finally, there is the visual system. This visual system helps provide feedback to the body to help recognize movements of both the environment and the body.

What happens as we get older?

These systems begin to have difficulty “speaking” to one another. This may be due to the natural aging process, neurological conditions that may arise, influence of medications, etc.
