Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month

Updated: Apr 27, 2021

April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month. For those who are not familiar with PD, it is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement. Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease include tremors, slowed movement, rigidity, impaired posture and balance, loss of automatic movements, speech changes, and more. These symptoms are caused when the Dopamine producing nerve cells in the brain break down or die. While there is no cure for PD, there are ways of managing the disease progression. Exercise is crucial for disease management. Exercise increases dopamine levels, which can reduce some of the above-mentioned symptoms. Exercise also addresses posture and gait changes, improves sleep, reduces depression and anxiety, and improves digestion and circulation.

Program design varies widely based on individual needs and abilities. At Reneu Health, we rely on evidence-based practice and detailed assessment to develop the most effective exercise plan for each client. In general, exercise can improve posture, balance, gait, and cognitive function. Exercise intensity is also important, as research suggests that consistent intensive exercise heightens Dopamine sensitivity and increases growth factors in the brains of those with the disease. (See research from Dr. Giselle Petzinger, board-certified neurologist from Keck school of medicine at USC)
