Meet Chris and Roya Corpuz of Reneu Health

Story as published in SDVoyager March 16th, 2020. Original story here.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris and Roya Corpuz.

Chris and Roya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today? Reneu Health started as a dream. My wife and I were working in spinal cord injury recovery at the time (2008), and we were fortunate to be mentored by a group of exercise specialists who were not afraid to challenge the standard of care. They were using evidence-based techniques to help clients regain movement and function after a devastating injury.

Clients who were told by the medical community that they should not expect to regain any function, We witnessed progress years and even decades post-injury. It was the dedication and the perseverance of every team member and every client and family member that inspired us to branch out and give hope to other populations who experience similar feelings of hopelessness.

In 2010 we opened Reneu Health to bring a fresh perspective to prevention, disease management, and recovery. The reality is that the body is resilient and responds well to movement and exercise, regardless of age or health status. We improve quality for aging adults, movement disorders, and neurological conditions. We have contributed to the improvement of quality of life after a stroke, after surgery, and after years of inactivity.

Decline in health is not an inevitable consequence of aging, but rather a failure to provide the body with the right stimulus. That stimulus involves movement and exercise but varies widely for everyone. This is why individualized care is so important. Each individual needs to be assessed and prescribed an appropriate exercise plan that is specifically tailored to his/her needs. Our dream was to change the course of aging and help as many people as possible by educating them on how to take control of their health. We are fortunate enough that the dream has become a reality.

We know there is more work to do; we continuously work on reaching more people and changing the current mindset. We are now serving clients throughout San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles. We plan to continue our growth and expand up the west coast. We are also getting more opportunities to apply our knowledge and experience to some of the leaders in adaptive technologies. We were recently granted a contract to be part of a research project at UCLA. Please follow our social media for updates on that project.

Has it been a smooth road? We have been fortunate, but no business has a completely smooth ride. Expansion comes with growing pains and the learning curve is steep! Kinesiology is still a growing field. One of our biggest challenges is community education. We need to educate people on what Kinesiology is, and how to use movement to combat chronic health issues. Aging is certain, decline is not!

Another challenge is finding the right people for the job. We hire for hearts and smarts. Not only do you need the knowledge, skills, and experience to work with special populations, but you must truly love the work and have compassion for your clients. That can’t be taught!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Reneu Health – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others. Reneu Health is a team of an experienced clinical kinesiologist. We specialize in preventive and rehabilitative exercise programs for aging adults and those with movement disorders. We help manage age-related issues, such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia, fall risk, pain, stroke recovery and more. We are known for our attention to detail. We spend a great deal of time assessing our clients, understanding their concerns, goals and designing very personalized exercise programs. As a company, we are most proud of the quality of care we provide. Our team is nothing short of extraordinary. It is not their skill and knowledge alone, but their genuine desire to go above and beyond to improve the life of every individual and family we reach. We are very lucky to have them.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success? I would say perseverance and dedication have been the keys to our success. We are not willing to accept the status quo. We are not willing to accept that age-related decline is out of our hands. We will stay focused on our mission and grow this business one client at a time. Our dedication to our clients—past, present, and future drives our efforts and will power us through whatever challenges are ahead.
